Description:

A TA who is enrolled in one section can enter and clear grades for students in other sections.

A minor but potentially confusing gradebook bug came to our attention yesterday.

This bug does not apply to everyone using ICON’s gradebook, but everyone using the gradebook should be aware of this issue.

This bug only applies to courses that have been mapped (i.e. had their sections combined) and has TAs grading students by sections.

Example Scenario:

A TA is in a course with two sections, section A and section B. The TA is only enrolled in section A. This means that the TA can only enter grades for students in section A. However, if the TA uses the Grade All or Clear All buttons for an individual gradebook item, these changes will be applied to all students in the course, regardless of their section enrollment. So, if our TA clicks Grade All when only seeing Section A, those changes will be applied to Section B students as well (even though our TA is not enrolled in Section B).

The gradebook Events Log keeps track of any changes made to gradebook items, so if a TA inadvertently clears or applies grades for all sections, the original grades can be restored by hand.

This issue has been reported to the software vendor with highest priority, and they are working on a solution.

In the mean time, the Clear All and Grade All button text as well as the wording of the confirmation boxes have been clarified to reflect this behavior, and our online documentation has been updated.

To reiterate, using the Grade All or Clear All buttons for an individual gradebook item applies that grade to ALL students in ALL sections. What’s even more frustrating is if a TA uses either of these buttons, it will appear to that TA that they have only cleared/graded students in their section as they do not see the sections they are not enrolled in, and would not notice the changes made there.
