Adding Participants

Enrolling UI Students

Students who are officially registered for your UI class will be enrolled in your ICON course automatically (you don’t need to submit a student ICON registration request). ICON will continue to add new students daily.  ICON will also automatically drop students who are no longer officially registered for your course.

Important: Enrolling students in your ICON course does not automatically grant them access. (See Making Your Course Available / Unavailable.)

You can enroll additional students, provided they have HawkIDs. The names of the individuals will appear in the Email and Classlist listing.

To enroll a student in your ICON course:

Via the Classlist:

  1. From the Course Home, click Classlist in the Course Tools widget
  2. Click  Add Participants.
  3. Click Add an Existing User.
  4. In the Search For: box, type their HawkID (available at http://www.uiowa.edu/homepage/directories/).
  5. In the Search Results list, click the checkbox next to the person you wish to add.
  6. Set the role drop down to .Student, and the Section drop down to one of the available choices (sometimes you may only have one choice).
  7. By default, the person you are about to add will receive an email notice unless you deselect the checkbox for Send an enrollment email.
  8. Click the Enroll Selected Users button.

Via the User Enrollments tool:

  1. From the Course Home, click Edit Course in the NavBar.
  2. Click user reg img User Enrollments.
  3. Click add participant button Add Participant.
  4. In the Search for: box, type the HawkID (available at http://www.uiowa.edu/homepage/directories/).
  5. In the Search Results list, click the checkbox for the person you wish to add.
  6. By default, the person you are about to add will receive an email notice unless you deselect the checkbox for Send an enrollment email.
  7. From the Role drop down list to the right of the student's name, select .Student.
  8. Click Enroll. The new participant’s name will appear in the Registration List.
  9. To return to your course homepage, click on the Course Home link on the top left navigation bar.

Enrolling TA's and Instructor/Designers

If you are the Instructor of Record and your ICON course has only one section of students, you can add the TA or another instructor/designer yourself the same way you add students (follow the instructions above but select Instructor-Designer, TA(high-level), or TA(low-level) instead of Student.

Note: Both high-level and low-level TA's can manage communication tools, view and grade quizzes, and enter grades in the gradelist.  High-level TA’s can also customize communication tools, customize the gradelist, and add course content materials.

If your ICON course includes more than one section of students, you can enroll the TA or Instructor/Designer in the other sections by:

  1. Click Edit Course in the NavBar.
  2. Click Sections.
  3. Click Enroll Users.
  4. Search for the TA's or Instructor/Designer's name.
  5. Check the boxes next to the section you want them to have access to
  6. Click Save.

Enrolling Non-UI Students

To request a guest account for individuals who do not have HawkID's, contact your departmental ICON administrator or send email to icon-support@uiowa.edu. Include the title of the ICON course and the name and email address of the person you want to enroll.

Enrolling the Preview User

When you enroll the Preview User, anyone with web access can enter your course and view your content-type materials, including content files, news, and announcements. Preview Users cannot, however, view quizzes, discussions, or other interactive areas.

To access your course, Preview Users go to http://icon.uiowa.edu and click Preview login in the Log in to ICON box. A listing of links for courses that allow Preview Users will be displayed.

To enroll the Preview User in your course:

  1. From the Course Home, click Edit Course in the NavBar.
  2. Click user reg img User Enrollments.
  3. Click add participant button
  4. In the Search for: box, type the word Preview
  5. Click Search. The search results will appear in the list below.
  6. In the Search Results list, click the checkbox for User, Preview.
  7. From the Role drop down list to the right of the student's name, select Preview Role.
  8. Click Enroll. User, Preview will not appear in your Registration List (and thus not affect your course statistics), but your course can now be previewed.
  9. To return to your course homepage, click on the Course Home link on the top left navigation bar.
  10. To remove the Preview User, follow the steps in the Removing Participants section.

Changing Users to a Different Section

Student in the Wrong Section?

If your ICON course has multiple sections that are mapped together, and a student, TA, or Instructor-Desinger are listed in the wrong section or in more than one section, you can correct the problem in one of two ways:

  1. Click Edit Course
  2. Click Sections
  3. Click Enroll Users
  4. Search for the user, and adjust their enrollment via the check boxes
  5. Click Save

The nightly automatic enrollment process that takes place will place anyone into a section they are affiliated with in ISIS, but you can add them to sections in your mapped course that they are not affiliated with in ISIS.
