Getting an ICON Course Site

ICON course sites are available for Registrar-affiliated* and non-Registrar-afflilated courses; for instructor testing and development purposes; for faculty, staff, or research organizational purposes; and for student organizations.

For some UI departments, an ICON course is created automatically for each Registrar-affiliated semester course (check with your departmental tech support person if you’re not sure). For other departments, or for non-Registrar-affiliated courses, instructors who want an ICON course must submit an online request form. Faculty or staff who want an ICON development site or a site for training or other organizational purposes must also complete an online request form.

This online request form is available from the ICON website:

  1. Go to http://icon.uiowa.edu/newsite/.
  2. Select the type of ICON course site you want (Registrar-affiliated, Development or Non-Registrar) by clicking the link in the description box for that course site type.
  3. On the Hawk Sign In page, enter your Hawk ID and password.
  4. If you choose the Registrar-affiliated course site type, the courses for the chosen session will be listed. Select the checkbox next to each course for which you wish to have ICON course site created. Click Submit. (Note: If you don't see the one you want, check with your departmental administrator to make sure you are listed in OSIRIS as the Instructor of Record for that course.) OR, if you choose either the Development or Non-Registrar course site type, fill in the requested information and click Submit. Your course will be created within two working days.

A different form is required for student organizations. The student representative for the organization can request this form by sending email to ICON support at icon-supplort@uiowa.edu. The form must be signed by a faculty or staff advisor and submitted to the ICON administrator.

*Sites affiliated with University courses that are tracked by the Office of the Registrar. Students register for these course in ISIS.

  2. Under Log in to ICON (left), enter your HawkID and password and click Login.

  4. Click the course title.  You will see the Course Home.

Following are some common problems and suggested fixes:

You're having trouble logging in to ICON.

  • You forgot your HawkID password. Call the ITS HelpDesk at 384-HELP and request to have your password reset. Note: If you have already supplied the system with a “password hint” (a question that only you can answer), you can reset forgotten passwords yourself at the HawkID website (http://hawkid.uiowa.edu).
  • Your HawkID password has expired. Passwords must be changed every six months. If your password has expired, call the ITS HelpDesk at 384-HELP and request to have it reset. Note: If you have already supplied the system with a “password hint” (a question only you can answer) you can reset expired passwords yourself at the HawkID website (http://hawkid.uiowa.edu).
  • You changed your HawkID (e.g., after marriage). If you change your HawkID (to a married name, etc.), it takes 24-48 hours for ICON to recognize your new HawkID, even though Webmail and other University systems may allow access sooner.
  • You get an Active X prompt. You may encounter this situation if one of your ICON courses requires an Active X plug-in to download or display a file (e.g., a Flash presentation). Just click on OK and the plug-in will be added. Be sure to click the Install link at the top of your browser window.
  • Real Player wants to download an upgrade. You may encounter this problem if one of your ICON courses uses RealPlayer for content files or for the Pager (you may have a Pager message waiting). Note: Internet Explorer may abort rather than allow you to download RealPlayer. If this happens, either close the RealPlayer window or contact your instructor to see if RealPlayer is needed for the content.
  • You hear a beep or other sound. If one of your courses uses the Pager, an instant messenger tool in ICON, you may have a message waiting. (Click the Pager icon, top right.)

You're logged in but can't find your ICON course.

  • Are the course listings for the semester are hidden? Try clicking the little plus sign beside the semester heading.
  • Has it been less than two days since you requested the course? It takes the system two days to process new course requests.

You can see your course but your students cannot.

  • Have you made the course "active" (available to students)? To make your course active, click the Edit Course link in the Course Tools box on your course homepage. Then click to place a checkmark in the Active? box. Finally, click the Return to Course link in the far-right navigation bar.

If your course is "active" and your students still can't see it, or if they are having trouble logging in to ICON, have them check the FAQ's for Students on the ICON Online Help page.
