What is Possible with ICON Chat?
- Chat online in real time.
- Conduct a quick meeting, conduct online office hours, host a guest speaker, etc.
- Create two kinds of chat rooms:
- General - open to course members.
- Personal - open to selected individuals; can include anyone with a HawkID.
- View archive of past chats.
- Students can create Personal chat rooms (may or may not include the instructor, depending on the student's settings).

Creating General Chat Rooms - Open to Entire Class
After entering your course site:
- Click Chat in the NavBar.
- Click
New Chat. - Enter a title (one easily recognizable by students).
- Select General Chat.
- Enter a description (optional).
- Click Create.

Creating Personal Chat Rooms - Open to Selected Individuals
Personal chat rooms are restricted to selected individuals or groups; participants can include anyone enrolled in an ICON course for which you are an instructor; you can also other users who have HawkIDs or ICON guest accounts. Your students can also create Personal chat rooms.
- Click Chat in the NavBar.
- Click
New Chat. - Enter a title (one easily recognizable by students).
- Select Personal Chat.
- Enter a description (optional).
- Click Create.
- On the Chat List, click the View Members
icon to the right of your new Personal chat (under Actions). This takes you to the Members area. - Add or delete participants:
- To add individuals from this ICON course site, click
Add Members (top). click the boxes next to the desired individuals, and click Add. - To add individuals from another ICON course site in which you are an instructor, click
Add Members (top). Click Select Different Course (top of popup window). Click the title of the other ICON course. Then click in the boxes next to the desired participant(s) and click Add. - To add an individual by HawkID or ICON guest account (e.g., g_GBurns), click
Add Personal Contact (top). Search for the HawkID or guest account name. Then check the box next to the ID in the search results and click Add. - To remove individuals, click the the checkbox next to the names and click the
Delete icon.
Notes:
When you add someone by HawkID, you don't receive any confirming information, such as first and last name. Inaccurate or partial searches don't work. For instance, if you are searching for John Doe (Hawk ID jdoe), entering doe will not work; only jdoe will work. You can find the correct Hawk ID by going to the University of Iowa homepage, clicking Phonebook/Email (bottom), and then clicking on the person's name,

Participating in a Chat
- Click Chat in the navbar. You will see a list of available chats. If chats are Personal, individuals who have access are listed (those currently online are displayed in green).
- Click on the desired chat. The Chat window opens, and the names of all users currently present are displayed under Participants at left. You will not see messages entered before you logged in to the chat room. However, you can view an archive of the chat after the last person leaves the chat room (see Viewing a Chat Archive.)
- To add a comment, type your message in the single-line text box at bottom and click Send.
- To change the color or style of your own entries, or to change the order in which the chat entries are displayed, click the
Chat Settings icon (top). - To print the chat window, click the
Print Chat icon (top) and use your browser's print function. Then close the pop-up window. - To exit the chat room, click
Exit Chat (top right).

Viewing a Chat Archive
The activity in every chat session is archived.
To view a chat archive:
- In the Chat List, under Actions, click the
Sessions icon to the right of the chat name. - If there have been any chat sessions, you will see a hyperlinked start/end time for the session. Click it to view the archive. The chat entries are displayed in the order they were made (first to last).
