What is Possible with ICON Chat?
- Chat online in real time.
- Conduct a quick meeting, conduct online office hours, host a guest speaker, etc.
- Create two kinds of chat rooms:
- General - open to course members
- Personal - open to selected individuals; can include anyone with an ICON course at the UI.
- View archive of past chats.
- Students can create Personal chat rooms (may or may not include the instructor, depending on the student's settings).

Creating General Chat Rooms - Open to Entire Class
- Click Chat in the NavBar.
- Click Create Chat.
- Select General.
- Click Next.
- Enter a title (one easily recognizable by students).
- Enter a description.
- Click Create.

Creating Personal Chat Rooms - Open to Selected Individuals
Personal chat rooms are restricted to selected individuals or groups; participants can include anyone with an ICON account, regardless whether or not they are in your course. Your students can also create Private chat rooms.
- Click Chat in the NavBar.
- Click Create Chat.
- Select Personal.
- Click Next.
- Enter a title (one easily recognizable by students).
- Click Persistent if you want the chat to be ongoing (does not expire).
- Enter a description.
- Click Next. You will see a participant list.
- Click Add. You will see a popup window.
- To add an individual who is not in your class, click Add Someone You Know and enter the person’s HawkID or username. Then click Add. Close the popup window.
- To add one or more students from one of your ICON courses, click Add Classmates and select the class from the dropdown list. Then select the student name(s) and click Add. Close the popup window.
- Click Update.

Participating in a Chat
- Click Chat in the navbar. You will see a list of available chats. If chats are Personal, individuals who have access are listed (those currently online are displayed in green).
- Click on the desired chat. The Chat window opens, and the names of all users currently present are displayed under Participants at left. You will not see messages entered before you logged in to the chat room. However, you can view an archive of the chat twenty minutes or so after the last person leaves the chat room (see Viewing a Chat Archive.)
- To add a comment, type your message in the single-line text box at bottom and click Add.
- To change the color or style of your own entries, click the
Change
Your Chat User Identity icon (top). - To print the chat window, click the
Printable
View of this Chat icon (top) and use your browser's print function. Then click Back to Chat. - To exit a chat room, click Exit Chat (top right).

Viewing a Chat Archive
Twenty minutes or so after the last participant has exited a chat, the
Chat
Archive icon will appear to the right of the chat name on the
Available Chats page.
To view a chat archive:
- Click Chat in the NavBar.
- Click the
Chat Archive icon
to the right of the chat name. - Click the hyperlinked start/end time of the period you want to view. The chat entries are displayed with the oldest text at the top.
