What is Possible with ICON’s Classlist Tool?
- View list of students, staff, and group members. Search for an individual.
- Add a participant to your course site.
- Track an individual’s grades and course usage (discussions postings, content viewed, assignments submitted, quiz results, surveys completed, rubrics and competencies completed, and checklist progress).
- View student homepages.
- View participant profiles (email address, phone, hobbies, goals, or other information students choose to enter).
- Send email to individuals or groups.
- View a report of the adds and drops in your course.
Notes:
- The default placement for the Classlist link in all new courses is a homepage widget titled "Course Tools." This widget is not visible to students or TAs, only to Instructor-Designers. In order for students to access the Classlist, instructors will need to place a link in the NavBar. See https://icon.uiowa.edu/support/onlinehelp/setup/customizing/ for help.
- In earlier versions of ICON, the management of groups was handled in the classlist. Now, there is a dedicated tool for groups. See the Online Help section Groups.

Enrolling Students, TA’s, and Instructor-Designers
Students who are officially registered for your class will be enrolled in your ICON course automatically (you don’t need to submit a registration request). ICON will continue to add and remove students daily, since it is updated by the OSIRIS database.
You can enroll additional people in your course and assign them student, TA, or instructor-designer status, provided they are members of the UI community (i.e., they have HawkIDs).
Note: To request a guest account for a non-University individual, send email to icon@uiowa.edu.
To enroll an a student, a TA, or an instructor-designer in your ICON course using the Classlist tool:
- From the Course Home, click Classlist in the Course Tools widget or the Navbar (if you've placed it there so students can access it).
- Click
Add Participants. - To add one user at a time, click Add an existing user.
- Under Add Existing Participant, in the Search for: box, type the HawkID or the person’s name (this can be the first or last name or even part of a name). Then click Search. The search results will appear in the list below.
- Select the person you wish to add to your ICON course.
- From the Role droplist, select Student, Instructor-Designer, TA(high-level), or TA(low-level).
- Click Enroll Selected Users. You will see a confirmation that the user has been correctly added. Click
Classlist to see your entire list, including your newly added user.
Note: Both high-level and low-level TA ‘s can manage communication tools, view and grade quizzes, and enter grades in the gradelist. High-level TA’s can also customize communication tools, customize the gradelist, and add course content materials.
If, when enrolling a participant, you mistakenly assign the wrong role (e.g., you enroll a TA as a student), you must delete and then re-add the participant. You cannot unenroll users through the Classlist; you must use the User Enrollments link in the Edit Course area. See the Online Help section Adding/Removing Participants.)

Sending Email to All or Selected Users
Notes:
- To send email to everyone in a course section, use the Email tool. (See the Online Help section Sending an Email Message, under Email Tool).
- If you have an email signature set up, it will not appear in email you send from the Classlist (or other tools, such as the Gradebook). This is a known issue.
Sending Email to Everyone in the Classlist
- Click Classlist in the homepage widget Course Tools.
- Check the box above the list of names; this will select all the checkboxes on the current page.
- Click the
icon.
Note: this selects only the users visible on the current page. You will need to repeat the steps on subsequent pages if you have a large class. Sending mail to more than about 50 students may result in failure, so it is recommended that you do not display more than 50 per page.
Sending Email to Individuals
- Click Classlist in the homepage widget Course Tools.
