What is Possible with ICON’s Pager Tool?
- Exchange instant messages (faster than email) with students and colleagues who are currently logged in to ICON. Recipients who are not online in ICON can access messages later, after they log in.
- See who is online and who is offline.
- Page any ICON users, regardless what ICON course they are in.
- Page multiple individuals simultaneously (e.g., to invite them to an impromptu Chat session).
- Create a Personal Contact List and select recipients from this list rather than typing in the HawkID.
- View a history of your Pager conversations with individual users.
- Change your online status to “offline” so you won’t be interrupted by pages when working (students don’t have this capability).

Using the Pager with a Screen Reader
Persons using screen readers may want to turn Pager notification off, since the refresh rate for the Pager may cause some screen readers to start over at the beginning of the page.

OR
To add an individual or individuals from one of your ICON classes, select Add Classmate(s), select the class from the droplist, select the name(s) you wish to add, and click Add. - Close this window.

Reading/Replying to a Message
You can receive a page anytime you are logged in to ICON, even if that page was sent before you logged in. If you are logged in when the page is sent, you may hear a beep or other sound, depending on how you have set your incoming page signal (see Selecting Your Pager Signal, below).
- To view the message, click the
Page
icon (top right). - To reply, click Reply, enter your message, and click Send.
Attention Mac users: If you are using Safari and you have your page notifier set to "No Sound," ICON will crash when you have a pending page. That's because ICON is looking for a non-existent sound file. You can solve this problem by clearing your page in another browser (Firefox), but it will occur again the next time you have a pending page. A more workable solution is to set the page notifier to a sound, which would be annoying but better than the alternative.

Remember to turn your pager back on when you are ready to accept pages.
To appear to be offline:
- Click My Home in the Navbar (upper-left).
- Click Preferences from the list at left.
- On the General tab, click Appear Offline (top, under the tabs).
