Creating a Personal Homepage in ICON

Students can view their classmates' homepages using the Classlist tool. However, this tool is not included in the default template NavBar. If you wish to give your students access to this link, see instructions under Changing the NavBar.

There are two ways you and your students can add a Personal Homepage link in ICON. You can link to an existing personal webpage outside of ICON (e.g., on your departmental site or in Facebook or MySpace), or you can create a Personal Homepage from within ICON.

To use an existing external personal homepage as your ICON Personal Homepage:

  1. From your ICON MyHome page, click My Profile in the Welcome box at left.
  2. In the Homepage textbox, enter the address of your Facebook, MySpace, or other personal website homepage.
  3. Click Save Changes.

To create a personal homepage from within ICON:

    1. Go to your ICON MyHome page (upper-left NavBar) and click My Personal Homepage under Welcome ( left).
    2. To compose an html document in ICON, click New, enter a filename, and click OK. Then click the Edit icon Edit icon next to the filename, type your text, and click Save.
      • To include a link to a web site, open the website in a new browser window and copy its url. Then return to your ICON window and, if your html file is not already open, click the Edit icon next to its filename. Click the insert link icon Insert Link icon, enter a caption for the link, paste in the url you just copied, and click Insert.
      • To include an image, you must first save and close your html file and then upload the image to ICON. Start the upload process by making sure the image filename does not include any spaces. Then, on your ICON My Homepage screen, click Upload, browse your desktop for the image, and click Upload again. Once the image has been uploaded, click on the image filename to open it, copy the url (use Ctrl-C on a PC, Command-C on a Mac), and then close the image window. Now that you've copied the url (the path to the image), you're ready to insert it into your html file. Click the Edit iconEdit icon next to your html file, place your cursor where you want the image to display, and click the insert imageInsert Image icon. In the popup window, paste in the URL and click Insert. Click Save and Close the html editor.
      • To find out what other editing tools are available, hold your mouse over the icons. Also notice the editing/formatting tools on the left.
    1. Click the home icon Home icon to the right of the file you just created. The icon will turn dark to indicate this file is now accessible to others via the Classlist tool.

Notes:

Creating the homepage document on your desktop and then uploading it to ICON is not recommended. You would need to upload any images separately and then re-connect them inside ICON. You would also need to re-connect any website links from within ICON.

Instructions for students are in the Student Guide to ICON.
