Rubrics Tool
In this section:
What is Possible with ICON’s Rubrics Tool?
Rubrics are descriptive assessment tools that assign a specific level or category to a learner’s performance. Each level or category includes a description of what kind of performance would be in that level. If these descriptions are constructed well, the rubric will provide consistent grades regardless of the rater. This method of assessment allows for simpler and more transparent qualitative assessment of performance.
Evaluators use a rubric’s levels and definitions to determine the degree to which a learner has mastered a specific criterion. Rubrics also may be used as a formative tool for learners, as they give learners clear descriptions of what constitutes mastery-level performance.
With ICON's Rubrics tool, you can:
- Define ranges of proficiency and associate with percentage score or text (e.g., "Excellent").
- Define the criteria graders look for when assessing how successfully a student completes an activity.
- Evaluate student performance in a quiz, survey, discussion topic, grade item, or Dropbox assignment.

Rubrics
Rubrics are the criteria graders look for when assessing how successfully a student completes a learning activity (quiz, survey, discussion topic, grade item, or Dropbox assignment). You define the ranges of proficiency and associate them with a percentage score or text (e.g., "Excellent"). The Rubrics tool is a separate tool that can be added to the navigation bar. There are two kinds of rubrics: Text and Numeric, and Text Only. (Only rubrics with numeric scores can be automatically evaluated in quizzes.)
Creating Rubrics
- If you haven't already done so, add the Rubrics tool to the NavBar (See the Online Help Section Changing the Navigation Bar.)
- Click Rubrics in the NavBar.
- Click
New. - Give your Rubric a title and description (optional).
- Leave the “Don’t allow new associations with Rubric” box unchecked.
- Select the Rubric type.
- Text and Numeric allows you to fill in both quantitative and qualitative evaluation criteria. If you want a rubric level to be automatically assigned based on a student's quiz score or score in a grade item, you must choose text and numeric.
- Text Only allows you to fill in only qualitative evaluation criteria.
- Click Save.
- Click
Add Level (bottom). - Enter the Level name, Criteria, and optional Feedback for the first level—this is the lowest level in the Rubric.
- Click Save.
- Repeat steps 8-10 to create additional levels to complete the Rubric. For Text and Numeric rubrics, you will need to fill in the minimum percentage to complete each level except the first (which is 0%).
- Save your Rubric.

Creating Multi-Level Rubrics
The word “rubric” often refers to a matrix with several rows and columns. In ICON, however, rubrics can only have one row. In order to create a multi-level rubric, you must create multiple rubrics in ICON, one for each row of your original rubric. You'll then need to associate each rubric with the tool (dropbox folder, discussion topic, etc.) that you'll be evaluating by creating an activity for each rubric.
