Creating a Self Assessment
The Self Assessment tool allows students to test their knowledge without being evaluated by you.
You create a self assessment much the same way as you would a quiz or survey. Like the Quiz and Survey tools, the Self Assessment tool can access the Question Library and question types. This tool does not mark answers as correct or incorrect. Rather, you must enter feedback for each answer alternative or for the question as a whole.
Before you can use the Self Assessment tool, you will need to add it to the NavBar (see the online help section Changing the NavBar). Your students can access the Self Assessment tool using this NavBar link. You can also place a link to a self assessment inside the Content area.
Before you begin creating the self-assessment, click Question Library and create your questions there. See Creating Questions in ICON.
Now that you have created your questions in the Question Library, you are ready to create the self-assessment:
- Click Self Assessments in the NavBar.
- Click
Manage Self Assessments (top) if necessary. - Click
(top).
- Enter a name for the assessment.
- Select or add a self assessment Category for the assessment (optional).
- Click to place a checkmark in the Hints textbox if you plan to provide hints on questions (you can de-select this box later if you wish to hide the hints but don’t want to lose them altogether).
- If you wish to add text as a header and/or footer, Expand the page header/footer and select from those two options.
- Click Save Self Assessment.
- Click Add/Edit Questions.
- Click
Import.
- From the Source Collection droplist, choose the source you want to import from.
- From the Source Section droplist, select Collection Root.
- Select the sections or questions you want to import and click Save.
If you wish, you can also add a link to the self assessment in the Content area:
- Click Content in the NavBar.
- From the menu at right, click
New Topic.
- Click the
QuickLink.
- In the new window, select the Parent Module (the content module related to your Self Assessment).
- Enter a name for your Self Assessment link in the Title text box.
- Click on the
QuickLink icon to the right of the URL text box.
- Select Self Assessments from the Category droplist.
- In the Self Assessments droplist, select the assessment name.
- Click Insert to close the popup window.
- Click Save.
