Creating a Self Assessment

The Self Assessment tool allows students to test their knowledge without being evaluated by you.

You create a self assessment much the same way as you would a quiz or survey. Like the Quiz and Survey tools, the Self Assessment tool has a Question Library and a variety of available question types. This tool does not mark answers as correct or incorrect. Rather, you must enter feedback for each answer alternative or for the question as a whole.

Instructors can access the Self Assessment tool from the NavBar, but this link is not available to students. You must place student links to self assessments inside the Content area.

Before you begin creating the self-assessment, click Question Library and create your questions there. See Creating Questions in ICON.

Now that you have created your questions in the Question Library, you are ready to create the self-assessment:

  1. Click New Self Assessment (top).
  2. Enter a name for the assessment.
  3. Click the Hints textbox if you plan to provide hints on questions (you can de-select this box later if you wish to hide the hints but don’t want to lose them altogether).
  4. If you wish to add text as a header and/or footer, select from these two options.
  5. Click Save Self Assessment.
  6. Click Add/Edit Questions.
  7. Click Import.
  8. From the Source Section droplist, select Collection Root (or the appropriate section, if you have organized your Library into sections).
  9. Select the sections or questions you want to import and click Save.

Finally, you will need to add a link to the self assessment in the Content area:

  1. Click Content in the NavBar.
  2. From the menu at right, click Add Topic.
  3. Click QuickLink (the link name, not the icon).
  4. Select the Parent Module (the Content Module that will contain your self assessment).
  5. Click the QuickLink icon to the right of the URL textbox.
  6. In the popup window, select Self Assessments from the Category droplist.
  7. In the Item droplist, select the assessment name.
  8. Click Insert to close the popup window.
  9. Click Save.
