ICON Dashboard

What is the Dashboard?

Intro

The ICON Dashboard is a new interface for quickly accessing ICON course materials. The Dashboard is designed to show you a few key pieces of course data very quickly, including the most important course links, and recent course updates.

You can still access the old listing of your ICON courses by clicking on the "Go to the old 'My Home' screen instead" link below your list of courses.

The Dashboard defaults to the current semester, but you can change this by using the Semester dropdown menu (located along the left hand side of the page).

The Dashboard also groups your courses based on your role as an instructor or student. To access your Student courses, click on the Student tab above. Similarly, click on the Instructors tab above to access your instructor courses.

Feedback

We are actively seeking feedback on the Dashboard, and users can use this page (http://dashboard.uservoice.com/) to provide feedback and vote on other suggestions.

Course Listing

The left hand side of the page displays your current ICON courses.

In some cases you will only have a "Main Site - Course Name" link. If your instructor has set up additional course resources, such as a wiki site or an external web page, you will see those resources listed below the main site.

Definitions:

  • Main Site - the traditional ICON site that contains readings, discussion boards, grades, etc.
  • Wiki Site - a collaborative online space that allows users to create and edit pages (see http://wiki.uiowa.edu/ for more information).
  • External Site - a external web page, such as www.google.com or www.cnn.com.

Updates Panel

Course updates and recent activity

The Updates panel on the right hand side of the Dashboard shows recent or unprocessed activity in each of the current courses.

Clicking the links will take you directly to the appropriate ICON course.

For some activities, such as quizzes, content items, and discussion board postings, the Updates panel will show only new items that you have not yet seen. When ICON can't tell whether you have seen an item or not, as is the case with news items and wiki pages, the Updates widget will display a summary of recent activity.

If your course has more than two updates, you can click the "See # more updates" link to expand the additional updates.

Semesters and Other Links

You can change which semester you are viewing by using the Semester dropdown in the left hand corner of the page.

Additionally, you can use the links at the bottom of the dashboard area to navigate to the old "My Home" screen (i.e. the classic view of your ICON courses), the Wiki homepage, or this page.

Student and Instructor Tabs

The Dashboard groups your courses based on your role as an instructor or student. To access your Student courses, click on the Student tab above. Similarly, click on the Instructors tab above to access your instructor courses.

To log out of the dashboard, click the Logout link in the upper right hand corner.

Instructor tools

A Dashboard for Instructors

The Instructor Dashboard is similar to the student one. Note that it appears under the Instructor tab.

Instructor 1

The Instructor Dashboard updates widget shows updates suitable for the instructor, including ungraded assignments (dropbox submissions) and quiz attempts.

Add a module

Instructors may also add a module to any course through the dashboard interface. Along with standard ICON course sites, instructors may choose to add a link to an existing external site (e.g., course sites hosted on departmental servers) or to a site on the University wiki service.

Addmodule 1

When adding a wiki site, instructors can create a new wiki, or link to any existing wiki for which the instructor has sufficient priveleges. When creating or linking to a wiki from the ICON Dashboard, the wiki will be pre-set with student and instructor permissions based on the ICON course roster.
